Antares and Nebula around Rho Ophiuchus Universe Postcard

On the border between the southern constellations of Ophiuchus and Scorpius are some of the faintest yet most spectacular nebulae every photographed. The different shades of color are probably an indication of the nature of the dust that the stars create and that swirls between them.

Aurora Borealis Weather Phenomenon Postcard

An aurora borealis illuminates the sky in waves of color. On the night side of the earth, between the ionosphere and outer space, electrons, accelerated to high speeds, zoom along the arched pathway of Earths magnetic field, approach Earth's atmosphere at the poles, and collide with ions of hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen. Agitated to increased states of energy, these particles expel their new energy in the form of light.
approximate size is 4.75 X 5.75

Avalanche Swiss-Italian Alps Weather Phenomenon Postcard

An avalanche shatters the Alpine silence of Mount Liskamm on the Swiss-Italian border near Zermatt in September, 1977. Although there were no known fatalities in this incident, avalanches claim dozens of lives each year. Less than 200 miles away in the Italian Dolomites, some 6,000 troops were killed by avalanches in one day during WWI.

Avalanche Underpass Weather Phenomenon Postcard Colorado

Travel was not easy in those days, and an avalanche such as this one in Ouray, Colorado could prevent passage for days and even months. The congealed snow created by this and similar avalanches is 10 times more dense than new snow. Roadways were usually cleared with pick and shovel, or when possible, a new route was created over the top of the slide.

Between the Orion and Horsehead Nebula Universe Postcard

This wide angle view of part of Orion shows the distinctive Horsehead and much brighter Orion nebulae, both about 1,500 light years distant. In this region, radio astronomers have found extensive molecular clouds normally invisible at optical wavelengths.

However, between these two nebula, there is just enough light to feebly illuminate these dark regions,
producing the wispy tendrils in the middle of the picture.

Cluster of Galaxies in Fornax Universe Postcard

From A View of The Universe Collection.
Galaxies fall into two broad groups, Spirals and Ellipticals. A spiral galaxy, NGC 1365, is seen in one corner of this group of galaxies in Fornax, 55 million light years away. Most of the others shown here are elliptical galaxies, which can have a shape anywhere between a perfect sphere and an American football and are composed of billions of old, yellowish stars.
