On the dunes, right, are the village and church of Scheveningen, which lies on the North Sea coast, about three miles from The Hague. The late 15th-century church still stands. The coach on the shore has the arms of Amsterdam on the back. A number of small fishing boats are coming to land. This picture may be a collaborative work, deriving from a picture of the same subject by Simon de Vlieger. The figures, coach and horses may be by Adriaen van de Velde, the rest by his elder brother Willem. The picture was probably painted in about 1660 and is related to a picture dated 1659 in Germany (Duisberg, private collection). Willem van de Velde about 1660.
