(From their site) Hickory Hill has always wanted to record a traditional bluegrass CD, and we’re thankful that we finally got to do it! Old School is our eighth release. Our first four recordings are now out of print, but many of the songs from them are still available on our compilation CD, The First Fifteen Years. On our previous recordings, we’ve always included some original material and something a little different, too. On Old School Wes Perry contributes the original material with his compositions "Old Red” and "Fly Like A Dove”, and John Early provides something different with his powerful rendition of Steve Earle’s "Pilgrim” We recorded "No Longer A Sweetheart Of Mine” "These Old Blues” on our very first album in 1982.
We like these songs a lot, and wanted to do them again on this CD. We hope you like ‘em! We've performed "I’ll Never Love Anybody But You”, Old Slewfoot”, and "Paradise” a lot over the years, but this is the first time we've had a chance to record them. Wes learned "When I Am Lonely” when he was a member of Red Oak along with David Lege and Patty Mitchell. We had a great time doing the other songs on the CD, many of which were written and/or performed by some of our bluegrass heroes, such as Bill Monroe, The Stanley Brothers, Don Reno, and Larry Sparks. We want to assure everyone that we intend "Poor Monroe” to be taken humorously! This song was written during a time in the history of bluegrass when some rivalries and jealousies between artists were evident, and we wanted to include it on the recording. We have the highest regard for Mr. Monroe, and would never do anything to dishonor him. One of our fondest memories as a band is of a time when Mr. Bill sang one of his unrecorded compositions for us, and we tried our best to chime in on some harmonies!
